How we calculate
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the upper edge of the Sun touches the horizon, with the bending of light in the atmosphere taken into account. The US Naval Observatory (USNO) uses the same definition; we check our times against its tables and stay within two minutes.
Golden hour counts while the centre of the Sun is between 6 degrees above and 4 degrees below the horizon; blue hour, between 4 and 6 degrees below. This is the photographers’ rule, also used by timeanddate.com. Civil twilight lasts until the Sun is 6 degrees down, nautical twilight until 12.
Moonrise and moonset also use the upper edge, as seen from where you stand; the direction is the compass point where the moon meets the horizon. The phase and the lit fraction are for 9 pm.
The strip’s colours are CloudOmen’s five phases: night with the Sun 8 degrees down, dawn in the morning, day above 6 degrees, golden hour in the evening down to 2 degrees below, then blue hour. The app’s sky turns on these same edges, so a colour edge on the strip can sit a few minutes away from the photographers’ ranges below it.
The calculation runs in your browser with astronomy-engine. The city you choose is not sent to us; the search only downloads a small list for the first letters you type.
Questions
- When is golden hour today?
- In the morning it starts just before sunrise and lasts until the Sun is 6 degrees up; in the evening it starts when the Sun drops below 6 degrees and ends a little after sunset. How long it lasts depends on the season and your latitude.
- What time does the moon rise tonight?
- Pick your city: you get the time of moonrise and moonset and the direction on the horizon. The moon rises about 50 minutes later each day; on one day a month it does not rise at all, and the table shows a blank.
- Why do the times differ by a minute or two from other sites?
- Refraction, elevation and rounding cause small differences. We round to the minute and assume sea level; on a hill or at sea the day looks slightly longer.
- Why don’t you ask for my location?
- There is no need: a city shares the same sky across a few kilometres. You pick the city from the list, the calculation happens on your device and nothing is sent.
