A Frozen Moment in Space

Picture yourself on a specific hill at an exact minute. The sky above is unique to that spot and time, holding a stillness like a snapshot of celestial motion paused just for you. This image forms the foundation of your birth chart.

We view this wheel not as a prediction, but as a landscape. Each planet sits like a star in its own constellation. They relate through angles and distances, creating a rhythm within your personal sky.

Reading the Three Lights

Tradition anchors this picture with three points. The Sun represents your core vitality, the steady center of your identity. The Moon reflects your inner tides, private feelings rising and falling with intuition. Together they shape your emotional weather.

The rising sign marks the horizon where day meets night. It frames how you meet the world, acting as a lens for first impressions. Reading these three together reveals a dialogue between self, feeling, and presentation.

Finding Them in the Real Sky

You can locate these bodies by looking up. Find the Sun’s position at noon or the Moon’s phase tonight. Notice which stars rise just before dawn; that direction hints at your ascendant. This practice grounds abstract symbols in tangible light.

Observing the actual heavens connects the chart to reality. These patterns exist outside yourself, vast and ancient. You become an observer of your own cosmic geography, finding comfort in the order of the turning sphere.

How we calculate

We calculate the positions of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets with the open-source astronomy-engine library, as seen from the centre of the Earth. These positions were compared with NASA JPL’s Horizons data; the difference is under a hundredth of a degree.

The rising sign and the Midheaven (MC) come from the latitude of your birthplace and the sidereal time of that moment. Houses use the Placidus system; beyond the polar circles that system is undefined, so whole sign houses are used. Signs are those of the tropical zodiac, measured from the vernal point.

Local time is converted to universal time with your birthplace’s time zone, and the offset used is shown with the result. Without a time we draw the sky at noon, with no rising sign and no houses.

The calculation runs in your browser. Your birth date, time and place are not sent to us, to a server or to an analytics tool; the link you share carries only three signs.

Questions

Why does the rising sign need a time?
The sky turns by about one sign every two hours. The rising sign is the one coming up in the east at your birth, so a few minutes can change it. Without a time your Sun and Moon signs still appear.
Why does another site show something different?
It is usually the time zone: before 1970 some places kept time differently. You can see the offset we used and change it. Sites that use another house system can also give different houses.
What do the houses and aspects say?
Houses are the twelve parts of the sky and aspects are the notable angles between planets. We draw and name both on the wheel and keep the readings for the Sun, the Moon, the rising sign and the planets in their signs.
My birthplace is not on the list.
The list has cities with more than fifteen thousand people. If you were born in a small town, pick the nearest large city; with the same time zone the result barely changes.
Does the chart change if I move cities?
Planetary positions remain fixed, but houses shift based on your new latitude and longitude. The rising sign may also adjust slightly depending on the local horizon.
Why do different astrologers use different house systems?
Various methods divide the sky differently. Placidus focuses on time divisions, while whole sign uses simple 12 equal sectors. Both offer valid perspectives on spatial relationships.
